Awareness and Early Diagnosis Primary Care Pack

Cancer survival in the UK compares poorly to many other countries. National cancer policy aims to address evidence that low awareness of cancer symptoms and late diagnosis are the main reason for the gap between the UK and other European survival outcomes. It sets out a number of policies to help close the gap and suggests an estimated 11,000 lives a year could be saved if we matched the best survival rates.

As part of the Department of Health and CRUK’s joint National Awareness and Early Diagnosis Initiative (NAEDI), Anglia Cancer Network is working with primary care to improve awareness and early diagnosis of cancer.  We are doing this by recruiting GPs to provide awareness and early diagnosis leadership within each PCT and help implement a number of initiatives to support primary care increase improve cancer outcomes.

The Network has produced a pack containing tools to support primary care improve early diagnosis. Many of the tools and templates make good subjects for QOF and revalidation. We are encouraging all practices to consider how they could use the tools in the pack to improve practice. GP awareness and early diagnosis leads are visiting practices to discuss how the practice may implement and learn from them. If you would like to get more involved or have further questions please email the Network’s GP lead, Dr David Plume.

In order for us to monitor the uptake of the tools and to improve on them we would appreciate it if you could return the form contained in the pack.
